I’m Stumped: Ideas For Blog Posts

    By BFBpro | February 9, 2008

“Where Can I Get Ideas For More Blog Posts?”

One of the recurring challenges facing anyone who is doing any sort of regular blog posting is the question of where to get ideas for blog posts. Particularly when you are trying to get backlinks, after doing a a few dozen posts to promote the same site, you may find yourself staring at your computer screen wondering what to say next…

There are several strategies which you can employ to come up with ideas quickly. One of those is to simply tell a story — about yourself, someone in your family, a friend or another relative. You could write about your spouse, your children, your neighbor next door, a gas station attendant, your favorite pet – anyone at all. Simply make up a little story in your head — you don’t have to use their real name — and make sure that you are able to work in your link text in a natural way.

Another strategy for coming up with ideas for your blog posts is to say something about current events. If, for example, you have heard something in this morning’s news broadcasts about an increase in consumer prices, and you need to write about “secondhand clothing,” then you might want to write a blog post that reminds everyone that with the rise in consumer prices, saving money on clothing purchases is important, and that a good way to do that would be to purchase quality “secondhand clothing” — an informative post that uses your link text in a normal and natural way.

Speaking of current events, one of the best things you can do is to install a good RSS reader on your computer (I use FeedDemon by the way), and spend half an hour to an hour getting caught up on the latest news that interests you before beginning to blog. After filling your mind with information about current events, you may find it much easier to come up with blogging subjects. I can’t tell you the number of times that I have read an item in the news which has given me an angle for not just one but many blog posts.

Something else you can do when you are stumped for ideas: ask a question. Construct a blog posting as if you were asking the reader to respond to a question you are asking. Even if no one will be able to comment on your post, asking a question is an interesting and creative way of approaching your subject. Most blog sites have their contributors asking questions of their readers, so this type of blog post can work well — especially if it is about something controversial.

Finally, there is this tried-and-true method: read and comment on the blog posts of others. If you need to, block out some time on a regular basis to search for blog sites that fit your niche/market and read over their postings. Pick out several to comment on and reference them on your own site. The thing that is great about this approach is that you can use it whether or not you agree with the content of these posts. If you agree with their post, you can be positive in your response; if you don’t agree, you can still blog about it, while respectfully explaining why your view differs.
