Not Too Long, Not Too Short — Appropriate Blog Post Length
By BFBpro | February 9, 2008
An important thing to realize about Backlink blogging is that it is somewhat different than normal blog posting. One of the things that sets Backlink blogging apart is the average size of the blog posts. Typical blog posts can range anywhere from 200-500 words or more; however when blogging to gain backlinks, longer blog posting lengths are not necessary.
When you are doing blogging to gain backlinks for a website, it is important to have a blog posting which is not too short nor too long. When you make your blog post longer than it needs to be, you will be spending way too much time constructing each post. A blog post of 500 words, for example, could be broken up into 2 or 3 shorter blog posts. By shortening the longer posts, you will be able to prepare more posts in a given amount of time.
And remember, more posts = more backlinks.
On the other hand, you should be careful to avoid making blog posts that are too short. Blog posts which are less than 100 words, for example, have a tendency to look “spammy” and lower the value of the blog post site.
But there is a more critical reason to make sure that your blog postings are not too short: your blog post must provide adequate context for the search engines. You see, when various search engines spider a blog post site and index the content, they make note not only of the anchor text for your posting (the specific words and phrases that are underlined) but they also take into account the surrounding text near the link. By making sure that your blog post is of a reasonable length, you are giving the search engines enough information that relates to your link. This gives your link more impact and meaning.
All other things being equal, therefore, try to make your blog posts from 100-200 words in length.

As soon as I know how many words I’m aiming for I always struggle to either write enough or edit it down to a manageable amount. It’s never an easy game for me.
