This article is really useful. Overcoming myth number 2 will help me a lot in some niche sites I am about to launch. I do DIY SEO for my sites and get good results in most of them but getting links from related sources is almost impossible for some of them . Google’s algorithm is quite hard to figure out .

Have you tried the keyword luv plug-in yet? I am looking for some more blogs that offer it, especially now after installing it on 3 of my blogs. It helps you choose your anchor text without being a “keyword stuffer” AND hopefully it will help me rank high for the keywords instead of meaningless things like “Chelle” (which I’m on the first page of google for, no doubt due to my blog comments!)

Thank you for a great article. It made me change my approach to link building partly. I wasn’t aware of the myths #1 and #3. I only knew that the links from low PR pages are also counted by Google.

I appreciate all the methods to avoid. If someone is reading this and is now wondering what good methods there are to build quality links, I’d like to mention the following:

1. Use Squidoo.com to make mini web pages that are tightly niched. These could be on topics that you consider a sub-topic to your website theme. Just make sure to add your keyword anchor text in the body of the conent. You can make as many as you wish. You can also use hubpages to do the same thing.

2. You can also write and submit articles on your topic. Make sure to give yourself credit at the bottom including anchor text with a link back to your site. If you submit these to ezinearticles.com, they might get used by others and get distributed virally.

3. Thirdly, I like to use Scribd.com to upload articles and power point presentations. The topics you discuss here can be related to your topic and include your anchor text with backlinks to your site as well.

I hope this helps and good luck building quality backlinks.

Excellent article. I am now a little confused. I thought you were saying that blogs with enable commentluv do provide dofollow links by default. Then again, you say that you found 127 blogs with commentluv enabled out of which only 39 provided dofollow links. I would have expected all 127 to be dofollow types. Can you please clarify this.

Taking into consideration all that was said above, concerning this shouldn’t be the only way to go about the search engine optimization process - can i say that for off page seo, i beg to differ ( a little bit ).

Perhaps, this methodology mixed with article publishing, Seo optimized Press Releases etc is really the way to go.

But,… here is the big but… I have worked with clients who promised all kinds of fiscal support for creating a large back link structure over an appropriate period of time,… and many of those clients failed to come up with the **fiscal** part of the support.

When one can take one’s own blood sweat equity and prove within a short period of time that commenting works and works rather quickly, a client who was acting reclusive, can sometimes sit up and take notice when their site is suddenly ranking in the top 10.

With the exception of article publishing, nearly all other methods require some cash to grease things along, and of course this is more true for ppc than other methods.

So, with respectful deference, suppose we put 100 backlink comments in place in the first quarter of the year, and we lose 6 of them by the 3rd quarter. Well, thats life, grin and bear it.

What would be catastrophic however, is if for some political or viral type reason, all blog owners were urged to turn on nofollow immediately in order to stop some kind of internet worm, act of God, viral radioactive hail ( pick your disaster ) lol.

Commenting works, and works quickly. Probably, it shouldn’t be used exclusively, but it can sure get things off the ground quickly.
