You got to understand that Search Engines have changed their algorithms years ago. Building links is still as important but it is more important to build relevant links than just having thousands of rubbish links to your website. Even Google has voiced its unhappiness in paid inbound links and has started on their campaign to penalize paid links. One important thing is that getting too many inbound links over a night or a week can also be penalized by Google.

Why waste your dollars ?

I know it sounds tempting. 10000 links at only $10… But the real thing is whether these 10000 links are helping your website to rank better in search results or Page Rank. I can tell you that the answer would be a definite NO. So invest that $10 on some other more useful things or you can even choose to donate to the Orphanage. Be meaningful.

Getting Quality links NOT Quantity.

Getting 10 Quality Links is far better than getting 10000 rubbish links. Search engines value quality website that contains rich and helpful information and having such websites link to you, will be telling the search engines that you also deserved to be a quality website too.

Paid Links : The Grey Line

News of Google going down on paid links have been published all over the Web. Is it time for Google to step in and take control of the situation where by webmaster buys paid links to get high Page Rank and SERPs ranking? I am really unsure how Google is going to penalize paid links, but i have already started seeing decrease in my paid inbound links in Google’s indexes. Time to build quality links…

Certain businesses tend not to focus on website marketing to get new clients despite an overwhelming amount of evidence that shows consumers are seeking out these businesses on the web. Handyman are a great example of an industry that tends to discount the importance of using their website for finding new clients.

One of the best things that a Handyman can do to significantly improve their chances of being found from search engines and take advantage of the fact that very few other handyman services are web savvy in their markets is to build up links to their website. Building up links leading to their website will not only bring traffic directly to the site from the websites that are linking to them, but also will increase their popularity and give them a huge bump in the chance of them coming up in a search engine for someone searching for a handyman in their local area with a search engine.

As a real estate investor that runs hundreds of different real estate related websites, I get the opportunity to both help the investors visiting my websites and help the handyman that wants to increase their exposure and links on the web.

As a handyman looking to increase the websites linking to you, you should consider finding other real estate related websites like mine that are willing to either directly exchange links with you or link directly to you without a link back. To help you thinking of the right types of businesses, let me name a few that you will want to seek out: real estate agents and real estate brokerage websites, real estate property manager websites, real estate investor websites, lenders and mortgage broker websites.

Think about the people that have referred business to you in the past. Do you have a friend in the roofing business that does not do general handyman type work? Ask him if he will link to you on his website and you can link to him from yours.

Another strategy that handyman often overlook is placing tiny classified ads on websites like CraigsList. These are one-way links coming to your website and, although there is an on-going debate over the effectiveness of these types of links in building link popularity, you should, with the right ad, be able to generate direct traffic from them at a minimum.

In conclusion, handyman services should focus some time on finding local, related websites to link to them to increase their business with direct traffic from those websites and also to significantly improve their chances of coming up for search engine searches for a handyman in your area.

Increasing the number of inbound links to your website is a critical part of any SEO campaign. Since the search engines rate your website partially based on how popular it is (the number of back links you have), getting better and more back links to your website will help improve your rankings.

One critical element that is often overlooked in developing an inbound linking strategy is the importance of obtaining deep links to your website. A deep link is pretty much any link that goes to your website that does NOT point at the homepage. With deep linking, you want to build links to the important internal pages of your website. This will help improve the PageRank of these internal pages and get them indexed if they are not already.

Focus on deep linking when:

Your homepage has a high PageRank but important internal pages have little or none (this may also be a symptom of a bad internal linking strategy)

A good number of pages on your website aren’t getting indexed by the search engines or have low PageRank

You’ve optimized internal pages on your website for highly competitive search terms

As you would do with homepage link requests, you’ll want to seek keyword-rich links from relevant websites for the internal pages on your website. Since most free website directories won’t give you links to internal pages on your website, you may want to consider paying for links or exchanging links for these pages. Of course, the better and more useful the content is on your internal pages, the easier it will be to get good links.

Reciprocal linking is one of the accepted methods adopted by webmasters to build traffic, increase link popularity and improve page rank. It is a known fact that in recent times search engines have begun to place more importance to one-way inbound link and consider it to be superior to a reciprocal link. It is also known that search engines do appreciate reciprocal links if the links are from quality theme related websites.

Webmasters receive regular requests for reciprocal link exchange either by e-mail or through their websites where provision is made for the submission of requests for reciprocal link exchange. Why are most requests rejected to the utter disappointment and dismay of webmasters of new websites anxious to increase their link popularity and page rank?

Some of the major reasons for the refusal to reciprocate a link exchange request can be attributed to:

1. When a reciprocal link exchange request is received, the obvious thing the webmaster will do is to visit the website making a request and try to identify what this website is all about. If the request is from a website with an irrelevant theme, the chances are the request will be turned down. The reason is that search engines will not give him any credit for linking with an irrelevant site and he cannot expect any targeted traffic from such a website either.

2. Poor content of your website is another major reason for the rejection of your reciprocal link exchange request. Websites with good quality theme related content are seldom rejected. In fact webmasters appreciate reciprocal link exchange requests from non competitive theme related websites since these sites will provide their own visitors with useful website experience and also receive targeted traffic.

3. If your website is with a PR zero or with a low Page Rank and if you request a link exchange with a high PR site, unfortunately your request will most probably be turned down. The reason being that the high PR site will not benefit by linking with your site. One saving grace here is that if you have excellent theme related content and indicate that you are growing fast some websites will link to you hoping that you will achieve high PR rank soon.

4. Most webmasters want to know whether your link directory is easily accessible to your website visitors. Hiding it in a maze of other information will not help. Your link page should be only two clicks away from your home page. A webmaster with a good link directory set-up will not be interested in complying with your request if your link directory is not easily accessible.

5. Having several dozens of links in each page is another reason for the rejection of a link request. If you wish to succeed in your request then you should ensure that you categorize the link directory and have not more than twenty five links to a page.

It should now be obvious why most requests for reciprocal link exchange are turned down. Having good quality unique content is the best way to start your reciprocal link campaign and succeed in your efforts.

I am fanatical about testing and specifically about testing my marketing and one of the tests I am currently running is on getting people from a few key, related industries, to exchange links with me.

This is basically what I am doing. I put out marketing to find people that would like to work with my clients that are not directly competing with me. An example would be a tiny ad on my homepage that says “Add Your Business, Service or Product To My Local Resource Directory”. Then, I explain that my clients would benefit from having a great list of local providers and I’d be willing to list them there if they also linked to my website from their website. It is a pretty typical link exchange request.

I was talking to a business associate of mine that was looking for ways to network and get more referral business from a certain industry. I told him about what I was doing and how he could, with some very small modifications, set up a similar program to build a referral network. They key, and what many business owners miss, is that you do need to actively market this exchange just as if you were marketing a product for sale. Fail to market it and you’ll fail to make a sale (in this case the sale is exchanging links).

In fact, I look at so similarly to how I look at making a sale, I actually track conversion rates on a squeeze page to get more information about exchanging links (and even blog about that, but that’s a topic for another day). You can, and I believe should, actively be doing something very similar in your business and to promote link building on your business website.

Most savvy website owners today understand, at least in general terms, the importance of gaining backlinks for their website — all other things being equal, a site with a large number of quality, relevant (to the theme of the site) backlinks should rank better in search engine results pages (SERP’s) than a site without them. These backlinks may also help to drive some traffic to the site, depending on where the link is found.

But many of these same people make a mistake: they only try to secure backlinks for their “main” or index page — the page that appears, for example, when you type in the general URL for that site (i.e., cnn.com, google.com, ezinearticles.com, etc.). A good question to ask is this: is there a benefit to backlinking to any of the OTHER pages on the site?

My position on this: it is generally very valuable to do this backlinking to interior website pages. Why? For several reasons. First of all, in the “real world” it is very rare to see any authoritative website that just has backlinks to its main page. If you have, let’s say, 200 backlinks for your site, and all 200 of those links point only to the main page, would that not seem very “unnatural” to the search engines? Would not normally at least a few of those links point to some of the other site pages, if they were acquired naturally? So one reason for doing interior page backlinking is to make sure that you do not get into trouble with your friendly neighborhood search engine.

But there is another big reason to do this type of interior backlinking. Consider the last time that you did any type of search using a search engine. When the results of your search were returned to you, what types of web pages came up in the listings? Lists of index pages only? Hardly. Most of the returned results pointed to interior site pages. Remember that — keep in mind that you want people to find your site’s interior pages also — and they need to rank well in the SERP’s — so you want to make sure that you regularly do some interior page linking as well.

Now, you will discover endless discussions taking place in SEO, Internet Marketing and Webmaster forums concerning what percentage of your links should be to interior pages versus index page, etc. Personally I prefer to use the 50-50 rule: 50% (half) of your backlinks should point to your index page, and the other 50% should point to a variety of interior pages.

That means, for example, that if I have a site of 10 pages, and I am going after 200 backlinks for that site, that I make sure that 100 of them will (eventually) point to the index page, and the other 100 point to the other (interior) pages — perhaps evenly distributed (in this case 9-10 per interior page). Normally, in my SEO efforts, I will secure the links to the index page first (just to keep this whole effort organized), then a bit later on secure the interior page links. So far, this strategy has worked well for my sites; I encourage you to try it out with your sites in your market. But however you go about it, make sure that you do regular interior page backlinking.

I recently had a question about configuring some software for my website and proceeded to go to a discussion forum about the software. When I was posting my question, I had actually linked to my website to show what I was talking about to the forum for help and I re-discovered a long lost link building tactic that I haven’t used in years.

Some discussion forums are extremely popular, well indexed in search engines and highly relative content to certain businesses or industries. These can make for excellent places to have one-way links to your website established easily and usually at no cost.

In this particular case, I was browsing my web logs and noticed that I was actually getting some direct traffic to my website from this AND I also happened to notice that the page in the form with my questions was ranking well in search engines and it seemed was getting traffic as well.

Some SEO folks argue that search engines devalue links from discussion forums significantly and do not count them toward improving your website’s search engine ranking. That’s fine with me. Some forum’s pages rank extremely well and you can get direct traffic from the links.

Plus, if you are already active in a forum, how much extra work is it to include a link to your website in your signature anyway. If you are already going to be posting, you might just as well get some additional benefit from it.

So, don’t forget to include valid, appropriate participation in related discussion forums to your toolbox for building great quality links back to your website

First, I do not presume to know your exact business, but I am going to share with you a strategy I use in my business and I encourage you to adapt it to work within the limitations and differences of your business.

So, here is a great way that you can build lots of people linking back to your website: bribe them. Now, before I get bashed for contradicting myself by many people who may have read my other article on how paying for links to your website is like paying for sex, I want to admit that it may seem similar.

However, I do justify it in my own mind a bit differently. Maybe you see it the same way I do. Maybe you don’t and maybe you do want to throw stones for the contradictory advice.

Here is one thing that I do… I encourage people to link to my website and when they do, I track the number of people that come to me from their link and I reward them with points they can redeem for additional content, audio downloads, courses and other things of that nature. It is more like an affiliate program that doesn’t pay cash than it is buying links if you want to look at it that way.

However, there are some variations that you might consider to make it work for your business. If someone were to link back to your website, perhaps you’d want to send them, completely unsolicited, a thank you letter in the US Mail (e-mail is cheap and thought of as cheap, take the time to mail a thank you letter and it is memorable). If they add another link, maybe give them a gift card to have a cup of coffee on your. Use your imagination, but is a link worth a $5 gift card? A link from most websites, I’d say yes.

Myths abound regarding what kind of links will help you rank in Google. If you’ve been told that Google only counts links from pages related to your site, or that Google doesn’t count links from pages with no PageRank, or that Google doesn’t count links from duplicate content pages, you’ve been lied to.

Myths abound regarding what kind of links will help you rank in Google. If you’ve been told that Google only counts links from pages related to your site, or that Google doesn’t count links from pages with no PageRank, or that Google doesn’t count links from duplicate content pages, you’ve been lied to.

Google Counts Links From Off-Theme Pages

If your web page is related to arthritis, what constitutes an “on-theme” link (a link from a related subject page)? Maybe the first thing you think of is, “other arthritis-related pages.” That’s only partly right. Consider these subjects: swimming, cycling, weight loss, vitamins, different types of fat, comfortable furniture, etc. All of them can be related to arthritis!

The only way for Google to ignore “off-theme” links is for it to understand every possible relationship of every conceivable subject in every language they index. Sound impossible? That’s because it is.

I’ve ranked dozens of sites by getting links only from pages that are completely unrelated to the site I’m trying to rank. Google puts them all on page one, so I know it’s true.

Google Counts Links From Pages With No PageRank

PageRank is completely overblown these days. It’s true that Google used to weight their search results heavily based on the page’s PageRank value, but those days were gone years ago. I rank sites all the time by getting links from pages with no PageRank (or very low PageRank) values.

Think about it this, too: is it easier to get 25 links from high PageRank pages or 100 links from low PageRank pages? Because the myth about PageRank’s importance persists, it’s very difficult to get webmasters with high PageRank pages to link to you, but very easy to get links from low PageRank pages.

Google Counts Links From Duplicate Content Pages

Article writing is huge in the search engine optimization world. Why? Because writing articles that can be distributed to article sites like EzineArticles.com results in a large number of pages linking to your site from all over the web. It takes a lot of links to rank well in Google, and article writing is a popular way to get a lot of links. Each distributed article is a duplicate of the original, and yet Google counts the links.

Of course, article writing isn’t the only way to get a lot of links into your site with ease.

There’s a system that automatically builds links to your site in the way that Google likes to see, helping you to rank in Google very quickly. The system I strongly recommend has achieved thousands of top 10 rankings in Google for hundreds of webmasters, and can do the same for you as well. For rock-solid proof of its effectiveness, visit this web site now.

Link baiting is simply getting more and more inbound links with a twist. Rather than hunting out links link baiting brings the links to you through unique and popular site content. Matt Cutts defines link bait as anything “interesting enough to catch people’s attention, and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.”. Link baiting involves production of link worthy content, video or images, which in turn generates massive amount of one-way inbound links.

Link baiting has been long time regarded as black hat technique, but if it’s interesting information or fun, it doesn’t have to have negative connotations. Content can be both: white-hat as well as interesting enough to generate buzz. Floating information or ideas that people talk about is a sure-shot method to generate links.

You don’t have to be a big brand or have a lot of money to create link bait. Many people have created link bait on purpose and many have created link bait without even knowing it. For search marketers, the techniques, if handled properly in an ethical manner, can be quite helpful in producing good quality one way links.

How Does Link Bait Work?

Link Baiting is just like fishing. You send out bait (content) in the pond (the internet) and patiently wait for a bite (linkback). The article is the bait, and the link is the catch. A properly created page can capture huge links on its own with little to no effort from you.

The Hooks

Before any real ‘fishing’ can take place you need a link baiting hooks and they come in all shape and sizes:

1. News Hook
2. Resource Hooks
3. Contrary Hook
4. Attack Hook
5. Humor Hooks

1. News Hooks

For this to work you almost exclusively have to break the ice on the matter, that means to you have to be the first to break the news. Whether it’s the latest gadget or the latest Britney Spears goof, you have to be the first and the news should be big enough to generate enough curiosity.

2. Resource Hooks

Resource hook is more of an informational page. Do some research and build a great, unique and remarkable article in a field on which you’re an expert. It’s important you know what you’re talking about or else you’ll get trolled.

3. Contrary Hooks

Contrary hooks are when you contradict someone else’s statement. It should be about someone prominent in the industry and it should be controversial.

4. Attack Hooks

Attack hooks are next level of contrary hooks where you launch personal attacks on people taking the debunking of theories to the next level.

5. Humor Hooks

This is the easiest type of link bait, just blog about a funny video or story and you can get some major exposure. But it isn’t as easy as it looks, the niche is really crowded and that means you really need to have something truly funny on your hands and a lot of luck.

If your website is already ranking in the top Google results for your profitable keywords, you can double your website listing and traffic by creating and ranking another similar web page. So, instead of just one listing in the search results Google will return two listings for your website. This page may contain the product reviews, customers’ testimonials, product editions, editor’s picks, and some other information.

To get that second page listed within the Google results, link to it heavily from other pages of your website. Google will automatically attach it as an indented result next to your first listing. See an example of a double website listing below.

If internal links do not help the new page rank in the search engine, you may need to build links to it from external sites as well.

When it comes to link building, traditional link building methods such as directory submission, article submission, press releases, reciprocal linking, blog commenting and some other are great. That’s what almost all webmasters do for solid long-term results.

But sometimes when you’re at the beginning of your link building campaign, you may want to quickly get a couple of quality “DoFollow” links. With all that said, I’d like to share with you a couple of quick “DoFollow” link building opportunities for your new web page:

Post on educational blogs. You can search for blogs set up on trusted academic domains and leave a relevant comment. Many of those blogs may be NoFollow but not all. You can enter a search query like below into Fast Blog Finder Gold Edition to search for .edu blogs in your niche. Then filter the blogs by the Type to show only DoFollow links and read the posts. If you feel you can add something to the conversation, leave your comment to get a DoFollow link in return.

Example:"some keywords" inurl:".edu"

Setup a profile on Twitter. In your profile settings you can type a couple of links into the Bio field, for example, www.yourdomain2.com, www.yourdomain2.com, etc. Note that if you only setup an account, that will do no good. But if you are an active user, those links may send some traffic to your website and give some SEO benefit.

Post on LinkedIn Answers website. You can setup a user account on LinkedIn Answers, search for questions relevant to your market niche and post answers. Be serious and use your regular user name, write a helpful answer and include a link to your website or blog for more information.

Use DoFollow Social Bookmarking Sites. There are a number of social bookmarking sites where the links located on the first page are “DoFollow”. You can start with less popular websites that require fewer votes to get to the front page.

Here are some of “DoFollow” social bookmarking sites:

Furl (PR7)
Backflip (PR6)
Bibsonomy (PR6)
LinkaGoGo (PR6)
Mister-Wong (PR6)
Raw Sugar (PR6)
Spurl (PR6)
Buddy Marks (PR5)
Jumptags (PR5)
MyJeeves / Ask (PR5)

It’s a good idea to add a “Bookmark It” button to your website. This will make it easy for your readers to vote for your site in social bookmarking services. You can use this free Social bookmarking tool to generate a code with the “Bookmark It” image and a link to a list of 80+ social bookmarking services.

Example of the code:
<a href="http://www.expertarticles.com/bookmark/?url=http://www.fastblogfinder.com&
title=Fast Blog Finder">Bookmark with Your Social Network</a>

You place the “Bookmark It” button on your website or blog. By clicking just one button your readers will be able to vote for your website in dozens of social bookmarking sites.

Note that these tricky tactics cannot compete with general link building methods and I do not want you to focus on them as your primary methods to get links. I just want you to keep them in mind as unconventional link building ideas that sometimes may be helpful to kick start your link building process.

Please, share your thoughts in comments.

Building links is one of the important components of search engine optimization. Many marketers consider link building as a way to improve their websites ranking and drive traffic. There are many link building tactics out there. Some of them are aimed at building natural looking links that would produce long-term results. Other practices teach how to build many links in the shortest time and with fewer efforts. But such links can hurt a website in prospect.

When it comes to link building, not every link is counted as a vote for the website. Although the search engine is not a human, it uses the algorithm to discern good and bad backlinks. The search engine evaluates the websites links are coming from, anchor text, quantity of links appearing within a period of time and some other factors. If there is any doubt, the search engine can consider the links as spammy and lower the website in ranking.

So, whether you are just starting your link building campaign, or looking for new link building methods you’ve never used before, here is a good list of things Not To Do while optimizing your website:

Abusing Wikipedia

As you probably know Wikipedia has an enormous value for the users. This site provides accurate data based on facts and not on assumptions. Many Internet users search Wikipedia for quality articles and stories. That’s why Wikipedia ranks high in search engines. Some webmasters think about editing an article on Wikipedia related to their market niche hoping to obtain a backlink. Not a bad idea. However, to get accepted, your article must be well written, quality, open-minded and it must not contain any promotional or sales material. With all that said, if you are not very skilled in writing, consider changing your mind towards Wikipedia.

Abusing Video Sites

The websites sharing video files may be a good teaser for webmasters looking for backlinks. People come to such websites, watch the video they are interested in and share their thoughts in comments. But be careful. People hate when somebody chucks in their conversation with an off-topic comment. If you suggest a website that has nothing in common with the discussed video, you may hurt yourself. Potential website visitors may hate it in advance if they find it on most video sharing sites.

Spamming Forums and Blogs

Forums and blogs are being created to unify people interested in the same topic where they can chat, share their thoughts and opinions. Unfortunately, forum and blog spam is not uncommon now. If you run a forum or blog, you are likely to get so-called posts and comments that give nothing to the readers but are full of pure links. To protect against spam, bloggers often use anti-spam plug-ins such as Akismet which detects suspicious comments and moves them to the Spam folder on the blog. Using this method to build links you create a bad reputation to your website and company. In addition, because of several spam posts or comments you may end by being banned on the specific forum or blog and you may not be allowed to submit good comments or posts.

Adding Pending or Low Quality Sites to Web Directories

Submitting the website to the appropriate category in popular web directories is one of the common link building tactics. However, one of reasons the website is rejected from the directory is a poor, low quality website content. Do not submit carelessly done websites in the hope to get a link. Take time to develop a quality website thinking primarily about the end user and not about a search engine. After all, it’s not a search engine but human visitors who will browse the site, read the content, and click the links. Here you will find directory submission best practices

Spamming Other Webmasters

Contacting other websites owners for link exchange is not a bad idea. In fact, there is a good chance to get solid links this way if the link exchange is equivalent, the websites have a common theme and if you approach a website owner personally in a well written message. Sending an automatic email to random webmasters with irrelevant link exchange requests does no good for you or your website.

Creating Link Pages

Some time ago generic link pages were very popular. Those pages gave absolutely nothing to the users because they contained only pure links (often irrelevant) to other websites with no other content. The search engines consider link pages as an attempt to artificially build incoming links and increase the PageRank. So, if you were thinking about such a way of exchanging links, better forget it and consider placing links on web pages with content relevant to your niche.

The best results can be achieved with the links placed within the page content. Side-wide links and links placed in the page footer are not so valuable because they are mostly paid links. The search engines used to devalue a link if something would suggest that you have bought the link (the words like “advertisements”, “sponsors”, “supporters”, etc. near your link). If you still decide to buy links, at least make sure you are not buying tons of links with the same anchor text. With all that said, I would recommend blog commenting, guest blogging and creation and submission of unique articles as good methods to get inbound links within the web page content.

Well, I described just a few shady link building methods that can hurt your website if they are not used properly. I just wanted you to know these tactics exist and might be used by your competitors. However, if you think they are ethically wrong, do not engage into such practices and focus on good link building methods that produce not quick but valuable long-term results.

Please, share your thoughts in comments.

:: Source For This RSS Feed: BloggingForBacklinks.com © 2008 -- for more great content, visit us -- a nofollow-free site!.

Getting your website listed on the first page of the search engines is all about link popularity and how many one way links you have pointing to your website. Linkvana is a linking service that makes it so easy to increase the link popularity of your site that it should be banned.

The guys who created Linkvana have been top level SEO experts since the internet started back in the mid 1990’s, so they know what they’re doing as far as SEO, link popularity and promoting websites goes.

But the question I wanted answers to was “does their new one way link building system really work?” There’s lots of link building services out there today, but the biggest majority of them use well known link networks to post your links, which pretty much renders your links useless. The reason being that as they are so well known, the search engines (like Google, Yahoo and MSN) are well aware of them too - so any links they find to your sites which come from these networks will be completely ignored. Or even worse may actually serve to get your sites banned altogether.

So it’s important when getting backlinks to your sites to make sure your links come from well respected (and well ranked) websites that are trusted and respected by the search engines. Any thing less is at best a waste of your time, and at worst could result in your site being dumped from the search engines all together.

Fortunately, I know (and trust) the guy who created Linkvana, so I was pretty sure this system would be “top drawer” quality. But as with everything else I do in my business, I wanted to test it our first on some new domains. I didn’t want to use existing domains in case in resulted in the sites being banned from the search engines. So I registered 5 new domains, installed Wordpress on each of them, selected 5 of my favorite niches and ordered a bunch of articles for each site.

Once built, I started using Linkvana to promote the sites using a mixture high and low competition keywords for each niche. The reason I went for both high and low competition was to see how well Linkvana worked for the more competitive keywords as well as the “low hanging fruit” of long tail keywords.

I created a bunch of links for each site, then left them alone for a month to see what would happen.

One of the really neat features of Linkvana is that it will add the links to your sites gradually over time, which makes it look a lot more natural to the search engines. If a new site suddenly gets hundreds of links in a short space of time, it smacks of “automated submissions” and the search engines are well aware of natural “human managed” link patterns, and anything that looks “non human” can result in your site being “sandboxed” - which means you site disappears from the rankings for several months - effectively wasting all that work you just did. So to increase link popularity for your sites, making your link building pattern look natural is vital to success.

When I came back to check my new sites, I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. All 5 domains were fully indexed in Google, and each had the home page indexed in Yahoo and MSN (which was a bonus as I don’t normally expect to see much from those guys for a few months). The sites were also getting some decent traffic. You can get the full report of how my sites did, and how they are doing right now from my more detailed report at http://www.octocat.com/my-linkvana-results/

So, my test of Linkvana proved to me that it is everything it has been promised to be, and probably quite a bit more as well, and knowing the owner, he’s not one to over hype his business or services, so I’m very happy with my investment. It’s certainly something I’ll be sharing with the subscribers of my affiliate marketing tips newsletter.

Getting your website on the first page of the search engines can have a very dramatic impact on your business by bringing in floods of targeted traffic. Learning how to increase link popularity for your site is one of the best ways to get on the coveted first page. Linkvana offers a one way link building system that could help you gain backlinks and increase the link popularity of your site.

We all know that your blog’s ranking in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) is dependent on both on-page and off-page SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) techniques. The on-page techniques include things like the use of the H1 tag and keyword density. Each search engine’s closely guarded ranking algorithm places a different weight on the on-page SEO techniques, however most search engines place the greatest weight on the number of incoming links your blog has. And a great way to increase the number of incoming links is through the use of trackbacks or pingbacks.

A trackback (or pingback) is a notification that another blog has referenced one of your posts in a post on their blog. The trackback includes four pieces of information:

1. URL

The URL of the post that has referenced a post on your blog

2. Anchor Text

The text used in the link to your blog

3. Excerpt

This is generally an abstract from the blog post that surrounds the link to your blog. This ist to provide some context to the link.

4. Blog Name

The name of the blog that is sending the trackback.

Depending on your blog’s software or theme, you will generally find trackbacks displayed below the post contents either in a Trackback section or in the Comments section.

So, by referencing other blog posts on your blog, you are in fact creating a link back to your own blog post. Now, just rinse and repeat!

There are also some techniques to increase the number of trackbacks created for each post. These include a Link List post, a Blog Carnival post or a Comparison Review post.

A Link List post focuses on a particular topic and is then complemented by a number of links to relevant posts on other blogs. On publishing your post, the linked blogs will be pinged and your trackback will appear on their blog post. This is a win/win type of post as the reader is provided with a range of perspectives on a particular topic, the blog authors receive a link from your blog and you receive a number of incoming links.

A Blog Carnival is a collection of blog posts on a particular theme submitted by authors to the carnival host. Think of an editor publishing a magazine - the authors submit articles to the editor, the editor selects articles that best fit the next issue, writes an introduction for the articles and then publishes the finished magazine. A blog carnival is the blog version of a magazine and the blog carnival host is the magazine editor. By hosting a blog carnival you have the perfect opportunity to link generously to other blog posts and receive a trackback link to your blog from each of these.

A Comparison Review post looks at a product or service and provides information on how the product or service is provided by a number of supplies or vendors. By linking to other blogs where the product or service has been mentioned, you are building up a review that is helpful to your readers but also provides you with a number of trackback incoming links.

A trackback link needs to provide value to readers; otherwise it is just considered spam. If you are trackbacking to blogs that are not relevant to your topic you may find that the trackback notification is removed. Many blog authors have their blogging software set to moderate incoming comments/trackbacks for approval before publishing. No one wants to find their blog to be the target of spam. But, if you ensure that you are also providing value, to both readers and blog authors, your trackback request will be approved and providing another valuable incoming link to your blog.

Dave Naylor seems to think it is a good idea to nofollow blog comments.

In many ways he is right:-

You get increased automated comment spam

You get increased spam from outsourced commenting

You get increased spam from people using commenting efficiency tools (Comment Kahuna, Comment Hut etc)

You get increased spam from people using dofollow search engines

You get increased spam from people using lists of dofollow blogs

You get Internet Marketing Gurus encouraging their interns to comment on their behalf

It takes additional time to manage comments on your blog even when you set up Spam Karma effectively, but that is something you could outsource to compensate, or have managed by a more junior member of staff.

You also leak a little bit of extra juice, how much depends on your site structure, and how many comments you get. Some people prefer to have huge blogrolls of the people who buy them drinks at seminars.

What Do You Gain?

I think the biggest gain is in community

I don’t have to write all the content myself, my readers contribute and gain a small reward

What happens when you engage a community of linkerati? They link to you more often

If you gain more links, you are just sharing part of a bigger pie

The tools are keyword based - people with websites covering a specific topic visit your site - maybe initially to just drop links, but it is amazing how many can be converted to regular visitors who leave constructive comments, and link to you from their own sites.

Google doesn’t give penalties just because you decide to let those providing user generated content have a little link love.

I should know, my blog due to paid reviews has been on Google’s radar for a long time - I was one of the first to be hit with a PageRank penalty back in October 2007, and as soon as I blocked those review pages with robots.txt, my Google pagerank penalty was at least partially lifted, and I think in a more recent update they lifted it totally.

It does take a little effort, but if you haven’t got time to

Read the comments left by your visitors

Check out their sites

Give them feedback

Communicate

Why the hell have you got a blog in the first place?

I would be much more worried about comments on your blog which have been left with commercial intent with the upcoming changes to the consumer protection act on 26th May

Update

Whilst this isn’t in any way conclusive proof, it is just a little fun to add this

I have topical authority on my side to compensate for the fact I linked to Dave who posted first, though Google probably can’t factor those into its ranking that quickly.

Thus this result might just be domain authority… it doesn’t look like I have some kind of authority problem, despite having 1000s of dofollow links from comments.

The more you look around for information on getting your website noticed, the more often you will come across the statement “make sure that you have quality inbound links.” But how do you know if your links are quality links? How can you evaluate a link in the first place?

While the value of a link is a subjective matter, there are certain things that make links more likely to be attractive to search engines. Let’s take a walk through the basic qualities search engines are looking for:

Compatible Content

Having an inbound link to a site on horse care from a site about mountain climbing just doesn’t make sense. When looking at inbound links it is important that the links coming in are from websites that have content that is at least somewhat linked to what your website is about. The more closely related they are the higher the value of the link. For example, it makes sense for you to have inbound links from pharmaceutical companies if you run an online pharmacy.

Trusted Source

If your website has multiple links from sites that are known to be untrustworthy this is going to drop the integrity of your web site. By getting links from high class websites or sites that are well known you improve the level of trust that users are going to have for your site. For example, if you can get an inbound link from a government or university website this is a highly reliable source, while a link from an internet porn site is unlikely to have a lot of value. PageRank is Google’s way of denoting how trusted a certain web page is - as a general rule, the higher the PageRank the more trust that site has.

Contextual Sources

If your link is included as a part of an article or other document it will have more value than if it merely one of many on a link list. This is because it shows that the person who wrote that article is speaking specifically about your web site and isn’t just listing a general site that they may not even have visited.

One-Way Links

While many people do link exchanges in order to increase the inbound traffic to their site, these links are not valued as highly as links that only bring traffic into your website. Reciprocal links can be bought very easily and have little to do with the quality of your site. If you do choose to have two-way links make sure that the sites you link with are related to your site in subject matter.

Authoritative Sites

Many websites are known to be the authority on the subject matter they carry. Because of this a link to your site from one of these sites is more valuable than a link from a website that may not have any authority at all. If you are a member of an association, getting a link from that association would be great. Even better, if you have an article posted on that site that references your website you have a contextualized link from an authoritative site. These are very valuable links indeed.

Good quality links are not always easy to get, but they are essential when it comes to increasing your visibility within search engines.

One of the key components to any successful website is the number and quality of their inbound links.

There are many ways in which you can attract links to your site. Some good, some not so good!

One strategy that I have been using very successfully is to combine article writing with Google Alerts.

Here’s how it is done.

Step One: Write some articles.

Start writing articles and ideally make sure they are related in some way to your business.

I suggest you prepare at least a couple of articles and I would avoid writing them in Microsoft Word. Try to use something like Notepad. I’ll explain why in a minute.

When you have a couple of articles of about 400 to 700 words each, you should then submit them to the article submission sites.

Article submission sites are great for getting your articles distributed around the web. Not only do these sites send articles onto other article distribution networks, but lots of website owners come to these sites for content to put onto their own websites.

When you submit your article to one of the submission sites, you are allowed to add an “About the Author” paragraph to go with your article. It is here that you put a link back to your website using whatever keyword phrase you are trying to optimise on.

As you already have your article written you can simply cut and paste the article into the submission forms. I tend to have an “About the Author” paragraph already prepared to cut & paste as well.

Now the reason I suggested using Notepad for your articles is because when you copy from Word it tends to bring with it certain formatting issues and these can cause you article to be rejected by the submission sites. Notepad doesn’t have this problem.

Step Two: Find out who’s using your article.

By using Google Alerts you can set up alerts for each of your articles. I tend to use the article name is it’s fairly unique. Otherwise try using a distinctive line from your article.

Whenever Google finds your article, it sends you an email with the web address of the site where it found it.

You can now check out this site. If you think it will give you good traffic or pass on good page rank, you can contact the website owner. As they already have one of your articles then they probably like your material so you can either offer more articles (with links of course!) or even point them to pages on your site that they should link to because the content would be of interest to their visitors.

So there you have it. One of my tips for building links back to your site.

By the way, you might just like to put your website name into Google Alerts as you’ll be surprised how many alerts that can generate and you can also find many places mentioning your website.

If you’re serious about getting great ranking on Google you need to be serious about linking. Of course there are lots of ways to get links so we’ll focus on just the methods that are fast, low cost or free and get the best results. Here are three that can put you on top of Google in no time flat!

First let’s start with getting inbound links from directories. A link from a directory gets a lot of weight from Google because they value it as a form of endorsement. You’ve probably used some directories yourself, like Yahoo. Or maybe you’ve used some without even knowing it, like The Open Directory Project (DMOZ.org) that powers many of the most popular search engines, including Google!

Each directory is different and offers different options for obtaining links to your site. Here’s a rundown of how different directories will link to your site…

1.) Free Submission: Just like it sounds. No charges for inclusion. DMOZ.org is the best one and powers Google, AOL and even Yahoo Search (not Yahoo directory.) Just be sure to follow their submission guidelines and pick the most appropriate sub category possible for inclusion. This is extremely important.

2.) Paid Submissions: They charge a fee to review the submitted link and possibly place the page. You might pay a few dollars one tíme, a recurring annual fee or as much as the $300 that Yahoo charges for commercial site review.

3.) Reciprocal Link: These usually require you to link to the directory before they will even consider linking back.

4.) Featured Link: Your link gets a premium spot that you pay for.

5.) Featured Homepage Link: This is a featured link on the homepage. As you’ve probably guessed, this can get real expensive.

Yahoo is easily the most popular (and most expensive) but it’s not the best. It’s been my experience that a free listing with DMOZ.org is worth more than a paid listing with Yahoo. Even though Yahoo is more popular as a directory that people actually visit, DMOZ is much more popular with search engines and carries a lot of weight. A “vote” from DMOZ is a big deal indeed.

Here are the five top directories offering free listings. Some even provide inexpensive expedited listing services or featured listings:

1.) dmoz.com
2.) directoryvault.com
3.) domaining.in
4.) getlistedrightnow.com
5.) visitalink.com

There’s a site that keeps an updated list of directories, but not all are free. You have to visit each to see if there is any cost. Go to TopWebSiteTips and scroll down to the drop down box at the bottom of the page. Select your desired Google PR and search. If you want to avoid getting niche directories in the results, check the “General Directories Only” box after your first return set and rerun the search.

As a second option, you can also consider paying a submission service to get your site lísted in the major directories. There are plenty that will do it for a reasonable fee. Just be sure they do the following three things:

1.) Manual submission only.
2.) Verify that your site is not already listed.
3.) Provide proof of submission (usually screen captures).

Just search Google for “directory submission service” and you’ll get plenty of options. I’ve used SEONext.com/ in the past with good success. They provide a “slow submission” service that makes your link building appear more natural to Google and other top search engines.

And finally, there is no better way to get quality links than from a traditional reciprocal link campaign. This can be a time consuming step without automated software, but is very important.

Here are 10 steps to a successful reciprocal linking campaign:

1.) Write down the keywords you want to be found for.

2.) Draft a standard letter you can use to easily customize for each site (customization tips at the end.)

3.) Run a search on Google for each keyword and jot down the URL for each match returned (not just the homepage but the URL for the actual page you want the link from, which is the one that came up in the search.)

4.) Remove any direct competitors from the list.

5.) Go back through your list and find the contact info for each site. Record this information.

6.) Create a link to each page you want to get a link from. This should be from the most appropriate page on your site, not the homepage. Do not exceed 10 outbound links per page at most. The fewer, the better.

7.) Send the customized email with the considerations outlined below.

8.) Verify their backlinks.

9.) Remove any outbound links that do not reciprocate within a month or so.

10.) Check your inbound links every couple of weeks. Make sure you are still getting the links you earned and that the people linking to you have not moved you to a less desirable page.

Reciprocal Link Email Tips:

A.) Address the email to a person by name if possible.

B.) Start with a complimentary statement about what you like on their site.

C.) Introduce yourself and your site.

D.) Lead into why you feel your site is a good, non competing match (outline benefits for them and their visitors.)

E.) Mention that you have already linked to their site and hope they feel a reciprocal link will be beneficial. Provide the URL to the page you linked from.

F.) Explain why you linked from the page you did and the anchor text you used to show you understand link strategy.

G.) Request that if they link back they use one of your anchor text suggestions along with the exact URL you want them to link to.

H.) Offer to change the link anchor text of their URL if they wish.

I.) Thank them genuinely for their time and sign with your first name to make it more personal and natural.

You can do all of this manually or invest in a good piece of software to do the difficult and time consuming work for you. Many SEO professionals (myself included) use SEO Elite because it finds the best link partners, automatically gets their contact info and even manages entire campaigns. It’s also a link verification system and search engine rank checker so it covers all of my SEO needs nicely ($167.)

One of the most important factors in today’s search engine ranking algorithms is link popularity. Unfortunately, it can also be one of the trickiest. Webmasters are constantly looking for new ways to get links to their sites.

One of method that I often see overlooked is the use of testimonials. Most webmasters know the importance of using testimonials on their site to increase visitor trust, but few realize and/or make use of the power of testimonials as a tool to increase their sites link popularity.

Think about it. Virtually everyone selling a product loves to have as many testimonials on their site as possible. They know the more testimonials they have, the more “credibility” they have in the eyes of their potential customers. While it is getting harder and harder to email a webmaster asking for a link exchange, emailing a webmaster with a testimonial for their product or service is always accepted gratefully.

It is also common practice when using a testimonial from someone to include their name and a link to their site. This is because it proves the testimonial is real and not made up (yes…it is unfortunately common for the testimonials you see on many sites to be completely made up).

Are you starting to see the possibilities? How many people with websites are trying to sell something? How many of those people do you think would appreciate the ability to use a testimonial as to the usefulness of their product?

It is truly a perfect union. The webmaster gets something they need and in most cases, actively pursue from their customers and you get additional links to your site.

Did you know that links found within content are generally given more weight than links found in the footer or navigational area of a site? It’s true. Do you know where most testimonials are found? Yep.., you guessed it…within the content of the page.

Of course, you really only want to submit a testimonial for a product that you’ve actually used and like, but if you start actually thinking about the number of products, etc. that you use and like, you will quickly find a number of possibilities.

So, do yourself ( and other webmasters) a favor and begin submitting testimonials when you find a product or service you are pleased with. You’ll likely not only gain a new link, but you’ll be helping the webmaster at the same time.

See you at the top!

Blog commenting is becoming more and more popular as one of link building tactics. The comment author receives an extra link to his website or blog that favours the website exposure. And the blog owners are always happy to receive good comments - it’s important for them to keep a lively interest to their posts.

Of course, a “DoFollow” backlink is a great reward for a valuable comment because it helps improve the search engine position. But the comment allows a reader have only one backlink and this link may have the commentator’s name or nickname as the anchor text that doesn’t mean much for search engines.

So why not to reward the comment author with an extra link with more relevant keywords in the anchor text? This is an excellent way to promote the readers’ websites and this can be done automatically with the use of a particular plug-in!

I’m talking about CommentLuv. The CommentLuv is a plugin for WordPress that will visit the RSS feed of the blog address the reader provided in the URL field, attempt to find the last post the reader made and display it under the comment giving the reader a great internal backlink to his/her website!

Example:

Now many WordPress blogs are applying the CommentLuv plugin. The bloggers understand that it gives the readers an extra incentive to leave a comment, encourages people to add to the conversation by giving something back right away.

For the reader commenting on a blog that uses the CommentLuv plugin is great for the following reasons:

Second link to the website/blog. CommentLuv gives you an additional link, which is more advantageous than the link provided in the URL field because it has the post title as the anchor text. If you use your keywords in the post title, it will help you to rank well in the search engine results for those keywords.

More traffic and readership. When people look through the comments, they can see the titles of other commenters’ latest posts. If the title looks interesting, there’s a good chance they will visit your site and read the post. Some of those readers can become your subscribers or buyers.

Help with PageRank and search engine results ranking. If the blog using the CommentLuv plugin is a “DoFollow blog”, the link to your last post provided by CommentLuv will also be “DoFollow”. So, not only will it send the readers to your website or blog, it will also pass you some PageRank.

These advantages are really extra incentives to leave a comment, aren’t they?

How to search for blogs that use the CommentLuv plugin

You may be wondering how to find relevant blogs with the CommentLuv plugin enabled on which to comment on. The answer is simple – use Fast Blog Finder or Google and type the search query like below replacing “your keywords” with your real keywords:

"Enable CommentLuv" +"your keywords"

By adding your keywords at the end of the search query, you will reduce the large quantity of blogs to blogs relevant to your niche. You can also use some of these search options to narrow and refine your search results.

For example, if I want to find the blogs that use the CommentLuv plugin and are relevant to the “Internet marketing” keywords, I type in the Blog Finder Gold Edition:

“Enable CommentLuv” +”Internet marketing”

By the time of writing this article I found 127 blogs with CommentLuv enabled for the “Internet marketing” keywords. 39 from these blogs were “DoFollow” and 74 “NoFollow”.

Well, I get at least 39 blogs where I can comment on. It’s assumed that my comments are not spam, so I can hope to get 78 “DoFollow” links to my blog (because one comment will have two links: one for the anchor text in the Name field and the second one – a deep link to the latest post on my blog)! And we all know how valuable “DoFollow” links are. Just a couple of them can considerably improve your website ranking in search engines.

Of course, I gave a single niche example but you got the idea. Now you can change your primary keywords to your secondary keyword set and find one more hundred or two of blogs that use the CommentLuv plugin and are worth to comment on.

Few tips from me:

If you are going to comment on blogs with CommentLuv, make sure your blog posts have appealing titles including your target keywords. Not only will good titles attract the readers prompting them to click on your link, they will also help you rank well for your keywords.

If you use Feedburner on your blog, you’ll get a redirection link to your last post instead of the direct link to the article on your blog. You can read here how to disable the redirect.

Please, share your thoughts in comments.

[Editor's Note: Julia's Product, Fast Blog Finder is available as a free download from our free downloads page]

When you contribute your comments to other’s Blogs, it is an opportunity to show your personality, expertise and gain exposure for your Web site.

What many seem to not understand is that Blogs are about opinions and conversations not about one-sided desires for self-promotion. In the almost rabid quest to attain incoming one-way links to their Web sites, Blogs are being hit with generic dribble from marketers that serve no purpose other than reflecting the commenter’s desire to gain a coveted inbound link.

I have a handful of Blogs and each and everyone is moderated. By being moderated this means that any comments submitted need to be approved by me before being added to my Blogs for public viewing. My Blogs — my call — and I am very persnickety about what gets added to my Blogs by those I don’t know. It’s called quality control.

A site visitor’s comments do not see the light of day on my Blogs unless they meet the following criteria:

Their comment must include their name; at the very least their first name — typed properly.

Their comment must be specific to the post they are commenting on — and I mean specific. General blah-blah-blah doesn’t cut it — comments must include detailed verbiage clearly about the post in question or it gets marked as spam. Comments like “I see your point of view but don’t agree” without telling me why you disagree tells me you are just link baiting.

Compliments are futile. Yes, we all love hear how great our site is and having our egos stroked by site visitors. But my ego doesn’t not fall prey to those who try to compliment their way into gaining a link to their site from my Blogs. Only those compliments combined with thoughtful specific commentary will have a chance of being approved for viewing by my site visitors. It’s all about the conversation!

Between all my Blogs, minimally 200 “comments” each day are marked as spam because they do not meet the basic criteria above. Some of these comments are submitted by bots; while others are from naive marketers thinking that their incoherent typo filled grammatically incorrect ramblings will actually be approved for display thereby giving them that highly desired one-way link to their site that search engines look for.

News Flash to Blog owners — moderate your Blog and integrate the above standards as well. Doing so will help to increase the value and integrity of your Blog in the process. Otherwise you risk your Blog’s overall worth being affected negatively by “comments” that are of no value to anyone.

Commenting on Blogs is certainly a great way to gain exposure. But only when done properly and for all the right reasons integrating courtesy and common sense when doing so. If you don’t have anything of definitive value to contribute and don’t want to make the efforts mentioned above — then don’t waste your time or that of Blog owners.
